Introduction to Stone Carving: This is a fantastic way for curious, would-be sculptors to come out and try their hand at working in stone; with no pressure to complete a sculpture, while still having the time to discover if stone carving is something that you would like to spend more time doing, and learning about. Traditional hand-tool techniques and safety issues will be presented to students at this introductory carving session. Each Student will be provided tools and a "practice stone", as you learn and experience what it is like to carve stone! Direct Sculpture in Stone: This is my traditional sculpture class that I have been teaching since 1999. Creating sculpture and objects in stone is both challenging and exciting. The process is not as difficult as many think. My emphasis is in teaching beginners, however, experienced sculptors and artists are encouraged to join, in an expolration of the ancient art of stone sculpture. We begin by working in alabaster and will learn to choose a proper stone, basic safety and carving techniques using hand-tools, along with how to finish and polish your sculpture. Methods of presentation and display will be discussed. This is a class where you will have the time to take a stone from the rough, and carve it into you own creation. My Teaching Philosophy: My expertise is in teaching beginning stone carving; however, I have plenty to offer the experienced artist as well. My personal work is created in a more process-oriented style, so naturally this is how I teach. The reality of stone carving is that much is learned along the way, and the stone itself is a contributing factor to the outcome of what I consider to be the more successful sculptures. I do not subscribe to the idea of failure, or right/wrong, as applied to the creative process. Many so-called "mistakes" have been incredible learning experiences and have taught me by trial, some of the more valuable lessons in refining future carving techniques. The final product is not my main concern with the beginning stone carving student; being in the moment while carving allows us to focus on the basic carving techniques. I teach the basics, and more advanced technques to the continuing students, and can instruct you towards achieving the shapes or images that you would like to create in stone.
